PHOENIX-The world is about to be introduced to an innovative card game, designed by a 12-year-old from Phoenix, where two players use strategy and speed to build their magical repertoire and declare victory in the Wizard Duel.  The introduction to the world comes via Kickstarter, a crowd-funding platform, known for launch games.

Creator Finn Veatch, 12, started designing Wizard Duel with cards drawn on cuts of printer paper at 11 years old after finishing fifth-grade online classes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now Finn is ready to share the magic with a worldwide audience.  Finn's vision is to inspire kids to create and to bring people together through the magic of playing games.

“I am 12 now and want to bring people together through play and imagination by being a game designer when I grow up,” Veatch said. “Playing games unites people and allows them to connect regardless of belief, age, or background. That is important to me! I aim to make a game company, and to start it we need notoriety.”

The Wizard Duel Kickstarter launched  Sunday, August 28, and had fully funded with 5 hours.  Within the first 2 days, the campaign was over 200% of the initial goal of $5,000.  Over 235 people have backed the campaign; from Finn's hometown of Phoenix, AZ all way to a game store in Switzerland and many countries in between.   Finn is included among a select group of pre-teens who have funded campaigns, but none as young and funded as fast.

Wizard Duel is a fast-paced strategy game inspired by Magic: The Gathering, chess, and Rock, Paper, Scissors.  Each 15-minute round employs the cutting-edge game mechanism of Simultaneous Action—allowing the continuous engagement of both players. Save or spend? Defend or attack? Each player must anticipate their opponent’s moves and adapt their approach to grow power and win the Wizard Duel.

Veatch self-designed the first digital iteration using Canva.com, an online simple design program. Through playing with family and friends, Veatch revised the game, refined the rules, and ultimately manufactured the first commercial production run in early 2022. Wizard Duel went on to sell out twice from the Lazy Trout Market in Greer, Arizona.

And this is only the beginning. As one of the youngest game designers and a budding entrepreneur, Veatch’s Wizard Duel is the first game in a planned series.  Finn and Jeremy, Finn’s dad who is  a former owner of a management consultant firm, have started a website, iwu.io, that showcases four more games in development.
